Relay For Life Survivors Photography

This is the first photo series of cancer survivor’s candid portraits at Relay For Life events in Mid-Michigan. Each survivor has a different cancer story which is unique to them. However, each survivor shares a similar story of hope, celebration, remembrance, and fighting back. The purpose of my sharing these images are to show how the local community celebrates, remembers, and fights back to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

To all the survivors at the Relay For Life of Clio Michigan, Happy Birthday!

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – a inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

Owosso Michigan Curwood Festival Pageant 2011

The 31st Annual Miss Curwood Festival Queen & Princess Pageant was held on March 12, 2011 in the Baker College of Owosso Welcome Center. Six women were in the running for Miss Curwood Festival 2011 and 10 girls for Curwood Princess.

Erin Fox is a Miss Curwood Festival Court 2011 Member! Erin is a freshman at the University of Michigan where she is studying communications with a fluency in Spanish and Italian. Erin is an Owosso High School graduate and is the daughter of Jim & Lisa Fox. Her sponsor was CLH Insurance-Mike Ardelean.

Congratulations to 2011 Curwood Princess, Harper Newell! Harper is the newly crowned 2011 Curwood Princess. Her parents are Jeff & Allison Newell. She enjoys soccer, basketball, gymnastics, and reading.

Taylor Rose is a beautiful baby! This was my first baby session and it was such a great experience. Babies have a lot of expressions and Taylor fulfilled that with flying colors! Megan and Matt have been good friends of Megan and I. When we heard she was expecting Taylor, we were so excited and happy for them!

Taylor’s session was my first experience using my new Canon 5D MK II. I love the expanding ISO ranges and how usable they are. I shot a lot of these pictures with available light, f2 or lower, and high ISO. I think they came out great. I also enjoyed taking HD video clips during the session to capture Taylor’s emotion and behaviors, check that out in the post below or on my vimeo page.

Miranda Hopkins – Inner Circle Photography: I met Miranda a few years ago when we both worked in the school portrait business. A few steps later, she has an awesome photography business, owns a studio, and is a great friend! I’ve had the opportunity to second shoot with her a handful of times and take a few headshots for her. LR Virtual Copies {Photographer Tip}

I’m taking a small break from packing for this weekend’s trip (more on that tomorrow or Friday) to quickly share something about my post production workflow that just improved! Today’s Hump Day post will hopefully benefit/help other photographers use Lightroom better and improve their workflow! If you use Lightroom and have any tips to share, leave a comment or shoot me an email. I’m always interested in improving my workflow to be more efficient with my time.

I use Adobe Lightroom for importing, cataloging, meta tagging, and simple exposure and white balance correction. I do these changes on virtual copies (best thing ever) to keep the original RAW unedited. Then I have the option of taking the image to Photoshop for additional editing or exporting a high-resolution JPG. These are the first few aspects to my workflow after backing up my original RAW pictures.

Working with virtual copies in Lightroom is a great aspect that I enjoy. I can do any type of corrections without changing the original RAW file. I then can do side to side comparisons and see what I like best of the virtual copies. The best thing about virtual copies is that they don’t take up and space on your hard drive, because they are virtual!

One aspect I didn’t like of virtual copies was no way to tell a virtual copy from the original with a label or overlay. This just changed because I read an article over at Digital Photography School that gives the basics of virtual copies. Here’s the steps you need to do to set an overlay on the virtual copies:

If you use Virtual copies a lot you can configure the Info Overlay to show you which image is a copy. To do this, choose View > View Options and click Show Info Overlay. Reconfigure one of the info sets to include not only the File Name but also the Copy Name. The original image will display the filename only and virtual copies will display the filename and Copy 1 (or Copy 2).
