This is the first photo series of cancer survivor’s candid portraits at Relay For Life events in Mid-Michigan. Each survivor has a different cancer story which is unique to them. However, each survivor shares a similar story of hope, celebration, remembrance, and fighting back. The purpose of my sharing these images are to show how the local community celebrates, remembers, and fights back to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

To all the survivors at the Relay For Life of Clio Michigan, Happy Birthday!

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – a inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.
